Being a writer in the gambling industry for over fifteen years, I’ve seen a myriad of changes and had to stay on top when it comes to the latest innovations and features. The rise of cryptocurrency gambling was arguably one of the biggest events that changed or, rather, expanded the landscape in my career. Writing about crypto casinos requires the same discipline but a whole new skill set, and it is some of these lessons that I’m going to share with you today.
Understanding Cryptocurrencies
You can’t understand crypto gambling without first understanding cryptocurrencies. This is arguably one of the biggest challenges for the uninitiated and a stumbling block for many. It isn’t easy. It required me to revisit what had (at that point) been a modest tech background and learn how cryptocurrencies work, the nature of blockchains, and the security aspects that go with it, not to mention a plethora of new terminology to add to my lexicon.
Writing about cryptocurrencies would also test me in other ways. I’d been used to volatility in games, but cryptocurrencies themselves are volatile. When you play with cryptos, you are, in effect, taking two gambles – one with the currency and another in the game. Getting a grasp on how volatile cryptocurrency markets are, coupled with their legal standing, represented new challenges. Only once this was mastered could I turn my attention to how cryptocurrency gambling works.
The Challenges of Writing About Crypto Casinos
While my knowledge of online gambling was extensive, it took a little time to work out how cryptocurrencies fit into the picture. Gradually, it became clear that cryptocurrency casinos weren’t always licensed but didn’t necessarily need to be – a stark contrast from online casinos. Instead, crypto games rely on Provably Fair, a series of checks that can be made using seed numbers to ensure games are run fairly and not too dissimilar to a concept I was already familiar with from the gambling space – random number generators.
Understanding how games could be checked to ensure they were Provably Fair was one thing. Learning how to relay this information to my readers was quite something else. Additionally, the way crypto bonuses were marketed would also differ – fewer caps and restrictions needed to be explained in a way that didn’t make cryptocurrency casino offers seem like scams or present them as something aimed solely at high rollers.
Many cryptocurrency casinos discussed “instant withdrawals”. It rapidly became clear that crypto cashout options were becoming the fastest way to get hold of prizes, but what about fees? Just because crypto casinos didn’t charge fees didn’t necessarily mean service payment providers and wallets wouldn’t. After all, who was paying the miners for BTC transactions? Could withdrawals be sped up with a timely fee? All were questions that needed answers before any review would be produced, and this often involved long, tedious hours chatting with support reps at casinos.
Another challenge was finding out how to present casino reviews and games. In the past, it was safe to write a review, knowing that most players would understand what was written. With crypto casino material, I had to learn to write in a way that was understandable for beginners just dipping their toes into the crypto scene but, at the same time, keep content engaging enough for those already well-versed in digital currencies and gambling.
Different Priorities and Needs for A New Audience
When writing about crypto casinos, it became apparent that I would be writing about things that I wouldn’t ordinarily consider. There was a greater need to discuss Smart Contracts, Provably Fair, and in-house exchanges amongst a wealth of other new topics. Readers would also be looking for more information about KYC (or a lack thereof), privacy, and anonymity, things that seldom seemed super important to my regular audience before.
My articles also shifted in terms of conventional content. Readers demanded to know the difference between crypto-friendly and crypto-exclusive sites. Every review required precision – would a casino offer crypto-friendly games or convert crypto deposits into FIAT stakes for gameplay purposes?
Everything from how you talk about casinos to the grading criteria you write about the crypto casinos. There are new parameters to consider and new grading metrics, all of which you must understand fully before you can write fairly. This is especially true when you consider the nature of this industry. You should never attempt to convince someone to play with real money on something you don’t fully understand yourself. It isn’t right.
Final Thoughts
Explaining seemingly simple concepts is far more commonplace in writing about crypto casinos articles than in conventional content. Ordinarily, you can talk about slots, withdrawal times, and house edges, and most readers get the picture, even newbies. In crypto casino writing, you can’t just mention “faucets”, “DeFi”, and “tokens” without explaining them (albeit briefly) for beginners. The risk is too high that your audience will be left scratching their heads.
You simply can’t write about the crypto casinos, or indeed, any article related to the industry, in the same manner, you did previously. You’re writing for an audience that may be knowledgeable about cryptos or be none the wiser, and often, you won’t know which. You have to find a way to guide them through a review, a general article, a blog, or a how-to-play piece without necessarily holding their hand too tightly. It requires a whole new discipline to be learnt.
As with any good writer, those challenges were faced and overcome. It took a lot of time, patience, and perseverance, but if you want to continue producing content, even in a field you consider yourself a master in, you can never stop learning and striving to be better and improve.
